I've noticed two more HGTV shows about outdoor rooms. One is "Outdoor Room with Jamie Durie" and the other is "Take it Outside - with Kelly Deck." They just played the Romantic Outdoor episode on Take it Outside. The pic above is from Kelly Deck's website. It is absolutely lovely.
Jamie Durie's show is interesting because it doesn't focus on the process, but mostly the communication problems between Jamie Durie and his carpenter, Stephen, and his horticulturalist, Beth. From what I can gather, Jamie Durie has fantastic unique ideas, but they are all in his head and he doesn't convey his thoughts in a concrete manner to his crew. In the end, the outdoor room is amazing, but would be a little too much for the average homeowner to "do-it-yourself."
Kelly Deck's show, "Take it Outside," is more accessible. She takes the homeowner's interior design style and color palette, and brings it all outside. The projects definitely seem do-able for the average homeowner with a sizable budget.
In the end, I've realized that I'm clearly lacking in outdoor design skills. If I want a gorgeous outdoor room, I will have to study these two shows in detail. Thank God for Tivo/DVRs.
